Is no really the worst answer you can get

Is no really the worst answer you can getIs no really the worst answer you can getSelf-Assessment Quiz True or FalseTzu siche are instances when I need to place my needs ahead of others.I know how to follow up on a closed-ended response.I am not afraid to gently challenge authority.A part of being self-aware on the job is not being afraid to ask for what you want, setting boundaries, and teaching people how to treat you. This includes bosses. If you answered TRUE to the questions in this weeks self-assessment quiz, you probably dont have a aufgabe in this area, but your cousins might need a little bit of help. So do me a favor, and forward this weeks post on to them.If you arent asking for what you want on a regular basis, especially at work, whats stopping you? Is it fear? And what specifically are you afraid of? Is it the word No?If you ask your boss for a day off so that you can go to your daughters chess match, whats the worst thing your boss can say?A. You suck Youre the worst team player EVAH I hate you, and I wish I had never hired you.B. The timing isnt the best, but youve asked in advance, so let me think about it.C. No.Some might think the worst response is A. But my goodness, think of all the money youd earn with that lawsuit (Ive had friends who are bosses and have been sued for far less.)Some (like me) might opt to select B as the worse answer because its a non-answer. A passive-aggressive, non-answer at that. On the one hand, you were offered praise and acknowledgment because you planned ahead with your ask. This shows a certain level of respect. On the other hand, this answer sucks rocks because if the boss doesnt get back to you after thinking about it, you have to circle back and ask her again. Sigh Why cant people just make up their minds? But those of you who selected C as the worst answer, well, youre just flat out WRONG At least with a No you have something to work with. Where some might see the response as one and done, I see it as an open -ended response. A chance to negotiate Oh, goodyWhen it comes to negotiating, Ive been taught to softly repeat the response, with a question mark at the end. Then stop talking. No?Wait, silently. Usually, the boss wont give you the same one-word response again. More than likely, she might take the time to explain her answer a bit more. If she does say a curt No again, prompt her (gently) for a more specific reason.May I ask why? Again, using your softest Valley Girl Becky-voice.Is your boss overworked? Has she been chewed out for being too soft and handing out too many days off? Does your boss resent that she cant take time off to spend with her own daughter? The point is you gently press until you have an answer. This strategy is usually a win-win for those of you who arent used to asking for what you want because it forces you to be a tad bit dogged IRT about getting a final answer. Youve demonstrated to your boss (and hopefully to yourself) that you deserve a fully thought-out resp onse. After one or more encounters like this with you, your boss will recognize that youre nice, but youre not a pushover. And she hasnt strung you out on some dubiously defined future timeline after shes thought about it like she did in response B.By the way, if you are truly afraid of getting a response like that in answer A, you obviously work in the television industry or in politics (And yes, Im straight up throwing shade at these industries because Ive worked in them and know what Im talking about). But for the rest of the working world, its a response so far removed from reality that you need to just get over yourself, open your mouth, and ask for what you wantCheryl Grace is the sassy aunt, best friend, and mentor youve always needed in your life. You can also make use of your current relationships by askin g a trusted friend or mentor for honest feedback about how you could improve your soft skills. When the time comes to outline these skills in an interview, make a point to share concrete examples of teamwork, communication and prioritization. For example, you can discuss the number of people you work with on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and how you communicate with them in an efficient way (email, phone, in person, etc.). To showcase your ability to prioritize projects, you can describe the different types of projects and deadlines youve worked on and give an example of how you achieved your goals during a particularly busy work seasonEmbrace Technology Like Tech Industry ProfessionalsMost of us are far from being professional computer software, systems or applications engineers. The more systems, technologies and the digital applications you can use on the job, the more valuable your knowledge and skills will be.Boost Your Earning Power In 2015 With TechnologyWhether youre in a limited technology workplace or a tech-friendly, non-engineer workplace, there are many low-cost and free resources you can use to develop your skills and find new uses for technology on the job.If you can allocate money to your training, start with basic certifications in your companys technology system, such as different kinds of Apple hardware or Microsoft Office Suite. Remote Health Care Is the Future of Medicine

Remote Health Care Is the Future of Medicine Remote Health Care Is the Future of Medicine Remote Health Care Is the Future of Medicine Health care has a problem, and it goes well beyond the insurance questions and how everyday Americans can afford to pay for it. For generations, medical care in the US and around the world has looked more or less the same. Every year, we all make an appointment and visit our doctor. Beyond that, when something goes wrong and we arent feeling well, we make another appointment and go back to the office for another visit. As a result, health care has become an in-person, at-the-office experience for more or less everyone. We take time off of work, drive to the doctors office, and spend at least an hour or two talking about our health every year. But it doesnt have to be that way. Its 2017, and nothing is done in person anymore that can be done remotely. We can order shoes from our smartphones, work remotely, order pizza via text messages, and even meet our future spouses virtually before ever crossing paths in real life. Health care is no different. Every physician has a smartphone these days, says James Laskaris, an emerging medical technologies analyst at MD Buyline. And most people have a smartphone. Couple that with a network that can send anything anywhere in the world with some sort of smart sensormaybe its an ECG, or a pressure sensor, or something like thatand now you have the ability to take any kind of patient parameter or image and send it just about anywhere in the world. Wearable continuous ECG monitor. Image: Qardio Next-Generation Devices Were not talking about yesterdays heartbeat monitors or apps anymore, either. Todays connected ECGs, for example, can send real-time updates via the patients smartphone, delivering constant updates to their doctor that are recorded for later analysis. Doctors are even implanting monitorsincluding replacement hips and knees that have sensors built inthat can measure pressure, blood flow, and more, all in real-time without any action on the patients part at all. In other words, the implant itself can measure the stability of the implant, Laskaris says. It can also measure heat, so it knows if youre getting an infection. All this tells the physician that theyve implanted it successfully. All of this is based on microelectronic technology (MEMS), which has been in development since the early 1990s. What was originally dedicated to electronics has become focused on ways to implant those microscopic devices in the body. So now we have access to tiny sensors for artificial hips, artificial knees, pacemakers, and more that can connect directly to our smartphones and send data anywhere in the world. Networking pioneer Cisco is also getting into the act, working with both home systems and payers in the area of extended care, or any type of health care that happens beyond the four walls of the doctors office. The company is currently working on two collaboration platforms for the health care market: Spark, which is a cloud-based service that integrates distributed software with the companys own custom-designed hardware; and Cisco Extended Care, which adds software-as-a-service functionality to much of the third-party equipment that doctors and patients already use. Its all about video integration, including both scheduled and non-scheduled consultations, as well as on-demand video visits, all that can be tied into third-party tools in ways that make it both seamless and scalable. So, if Im a doctor I can have a consultation with another provider, maybe one thats a part of my network or at the same hospital campus, and I can just launch a video from within my normal applications, explains Barbara Casey, Global Healthcare Life Sciences Director at Cisco. It also allows for a patient to create a video with their providerwhether thats a doctor or another type of clinician. So, the beauty of [the system] is that it really allows our customers to use any investment theyve made, whether its a collaboration software package or hardware, in their own environment, but also allow patients with no infrastructure of their own, just their mobile devices or their desktops, to really enable that video intersection with a provider remotely. 2013 chart of anticipated world market growth for telehealth. Source: IHS Benefits Beyond Outcomes The upside for patients as a result of all this is clear: better care, and better health outcomes, without having to go to the doctors office or hospital every day. But telemedicine, which is the category that includes connected monitoring devices, is rapidly transforming the medical industry as well, allowing doctors to see and treat far more patients than ever before, while lowering costs across the board. And it is growing fast. Over the last two years, Medicare reimbursements for telemedicine services increased 25 percent to become a $2 billion annual market. For doctors, the real excitement is that these tools allow them to be in two places at once. Keeping an eye on a patient via video, looking at their medical records on their smartphone, studying their X-rays and CT scans from wherever they are, and completing almost any other tasks that are part of their regular work. On top of that new convenience, a stay in the ICU todays costs patientsand their insurersa lot of money. On average, the fees start at $1,500 per day and go up from there. The catch for hospitals is that they constantly need to be cycling patients through their facilities in order to free up bed space for others. There simply is never enough supply to keep up with demand, even at todays prices. Factoring in our aging population, and the need for qualified, and affordable medical care has become acute. What telehealth does is, now these patients can be monitoredall of their physiological parameters can be measured remotely, including blood pressure, ECG, StO2, and moreand their physician can have a direct video feed to that patient, along with their medical records, Laskaris says. With that ability, that doctor can now keep track of and treat a couple hundred patients at a time, all in a way that is cost-effective, scalable and doesnt compromise patient health. This technology allows medical professionals to make decisions that both to save money for their patients while also offering the highest level of care, without having to worry about overhead or bed space or any of the considerations they face today. Says Laskaris, Studies have shown that a telehealth system can save every hospital system in the country $422 per patient. Think about that. Its game-changing. Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Studies have shown that a telehealth system can save every hospital system in the country $422 per patient. Think about that. Its game-changing.James Laskaris, MD Buyline

How to Manage a Negative Employee

How to Manage a Negative Employee How to Manage a Negative Employee A negative employee can infect a workgroup or a team with negativity faster than you can imagine. An earlier article suggested how employees can deal with a negative coworker. Another suggested how you can deal with workplace negativity when you determine that you are the negative employee. Its difficult to fess up, but sometimes the negative coworker is you. It takes a degree of self-awareness that many employees are incapable of practicing. Sometimes employee efforts are successful in dealing with a negative coworker and occasionally a person who exudes negativity realizes that they are the problem. But, since employees are not skilled or trained, or comfortable at handling negativity or conflict, they often turn to their manager for help in dealing with the negative coworker. It is not the most pleasant component of a managerĆ¢€™s job, but if you manage people, you will eventually encounter a situation in which you need to manage a negative person- for the sake of your other employees and the team. To avoid this sometimes scary task is to let down your workgroup and allow an unconscionable situation to exist. You can manage a negative employee- and sometimes- you can help the employee turn the negativity around. Your best approach is not to let the negativity get started in the first place, but if itĆ¢€™s already creating destruction in your workplace, here are steps that you can take to manage the negative employee. 7 Steps to Deal with a Negative Employee If the negativity emanates from a single  individual, you can take these seven steps to solve the problem. Inform the Employee About Their Negative Impact Use specific examples that describe behaviors the employee can do something about in the workplace. For example, when another employee says, Ć¢€œGood morning, how are you?Ć¢€ and your response is a 15-minute monolog on how nothing is right in this workplace, you bring your coworkerĆ¢€™s mood and optimism down. You use up to 15 minutes of productive work time and make your coworker unwilling to engage with you in conversation in the future. You risk your coworkers avoiding you at all costs which will affect your work effectiveness and productivity. You will not receive the information that you need to perform your job or make important contributions. Avoid Becoming Defensive DonĆ¢€™t take the employeeĆ¢€™s negative words or attitude personally. They are not directed at you. For whatever reason, the employee is unhappy with his or her life, work, or you name it. No one likes hearing constructive feedback even when a manager uses the best, most practiced, approach to minimize the employeeĆ¢€™s defensiveness. And, the majority of managers have not had a lot of training and practice in dealing with difficult people, so their approach is uncomfortable for all parties. Ask the Employee If Something Negative Is Happening in Her Personal Life For example, a divorce affects every aspect of an employeeĆ¢€™s life. The loss of a close family member does, too. YouĆ¢€™re not a therapist or counselor, but knowing what is happening in the employees life lets you offer sympathy or another appropriate expression of good or hopeful wishes. It can also help the employee see that you are interested in and concerned about them as a person. Even as you offer sympathy, though, you must ask the employee to  keep the personal issues from affecting their workplace performance. Ask the Employee What Is Causing His Negativity at Work Listen to the employeeĆ¢€™s complaints and concerns until youĆ¢€™re certain that the employee feels heard out and listened to. Sometimes people repeat negative sentiments because they donĆ¢€™t feel as if you have really heard them. Make sure that you have actively listened. The employee will feel the difference. Some of the employeeĆ¢€™s concerns may be legitimate. You may be able to help them solve legitimate workplace concerns. Others, you may be able to explain why they exist and ask the employee to cooperate and have patience. Once the employee understands the timeline, the decision or the reason for the goal, their negativity may improve. Focus on Creating Solutions DonĆ¢€™t focus on everything that is wrong and negative about the employeeĆ¢€™s outlook or actions in your approach. It will only cause the employee to dig himself more deeply into their grievances.Focus instead on creating options for how the employee can create positive morale for themselves and their co-workers going forward.  If the person is unwilling to hold this discussion, and you feel you have fairly heard him out, end the discussion. You may need to begin the process of disciplinary action to reinforce the concepts you are sharing with the employee. Focus on the Positive Aspects of Her Performance Help the employee build their self-image and capacity to contribute. Talk to their about what they have done well and what their coworkers and you appreciate about their performance. Even during a conversation about a negative aspect of performance, reflecting on the positive is a welcome addition. In the Future, When Interacting With the Employee, Try to Compliment the Individual Any time you hear a positive statement or contribution rather than negativity from them, reinforce this attitude. Youll want to reinforce, as much as possible, the positive interactions the employee has with other employees and the workplace. If none of the above is working and the employeeĆ¢€™s negativity continues to have an impact on productivity, workplace harmony, and department membersĆ¢€™ attitudes and morale, deal with the negativity as you would any other performance issue. Use  progressive discipline which you apply effectively and legally  to the employees performance. Remember that these seven steps are worth your time before you become mired in the process of disciplinary action. Take heart from the fact that they frequently work when you hit an employees negativity head-on in your workplace.

Tips on Finding a Job Abroad for College Graduates

Tips on Finding a Job Abroad for College Graduates Tips on Finding a Job Abroad for College Graduates A rising number of college students have spent time overseas as part of study or travel abroad programs, and these experiences have sparked a keen interest in working abroad after graduation. There are many compelling reasons why grads can benefit from a stint abroad in an increasingly international marketplace. Cultural and linguistic immersion after college can ultimately make grads more attractive to international businesses and not-for-profit organizations. Challenges of Finding Overseas Employment Ironically, despite the movement towards internationalism in the world economy finding employment overseas is a more daunting task than ever. Immigration departments in foreign countries usually require employers to sponsor non-natives and justify why they should be hired over a native worker. Typically, this rationale must include unique talents and abilities that non-native candidates possess which are not sufficiently present among native applicants. New college graduates can rarely meet this standard when looking to work in the developed world. It is much more common for businesses to assign veteran employees with well-developed skills that are in high demand to overseas jobs. How to Land a Job Abroad Despite this challenging scenario, many graduates do manage to land jobs overseas every year. Perhaps the most common option is teaching English in a non-English speaking country, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. English has become the accepted international language of business and countries like Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Chile, Argentina, and the Czech Republic are eager to have their citizens learn English to support their trade aspirations. Work Abroad Options Many programs exist which can facilitate the placement of Americans into teaching positions in a variety of locations. Popular options include the Jet Program which places teaching assistants in schools throughout Japan. Grads should plan a year in advance since the deadline is in late November. The Chilean Ministry of Education also engages teaching assistants for public schools and provides housing with a host family, health insurance, and a modest stipend to cover some living expenses. The government in Spain offers a very popular program whereby U.S. and Canadian citizens act as cultural and language assistants in the school system and receive a stipend of 700 euros per month for an eight-month assignment running from October through May. Developed countries in Asia such as Japan and Korea offer some of the most lucrative English teaching opportunities which are advertised through websites. Grads should communicate with current teachers from their home area at target schools to gain first-hand insight about work conditions prior to signing any agreements. Working as an au pair abroad can be a great way to minimize expenses since housing is provided by a host family, in addition to a stipend. Many agencies exist to help connect grads with families, but make sure that you inquire about options if the placement doesnt go well and check references with current au pairs from the U.S. Organizations That Help With Finding Employment Grads can access other types of employment through a number of organizations which help candidates to secure short-term work visas as part of cultural exchange programs. BUNAC, for example, helps recent graduates to access a work permit for periods ranging from 6 - 12 months for employment in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. BUNAC provides some support through staff in those countries to help grads find jobs but doesnt actually place them in positions. Most participants in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland find jobs in restaurants, pubs, hotels, offices, and farms, which are not particularly career oriented. The Britain program requires grads to secure an internship with a training component. Job Placement Programs Another group of organizations actually places graduates  in paid short-term jobs or internships. Some of these programs have a focus on specific fields like government, technology, engineering or science. Cultural Vistas, for example, offers paid internships for 3 - 12 months with German organizations. Volunteering Overseas Volunteer service is another viable option for many grads. The most popular and financially appealing option is the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps currently has over 8,000 volunteers in 76 countries with the majority working in Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. The Peace Corps charges no fees and volunteers receive a multitude of benefits, including a relocation allowance  upon completing their term of duty, loan assistance, free travel to their service site, health coverage and preference for federal employment. Peace Corps alumni become members of a large network of alumni who can be of tremendous assistance with future careers. Many other programs charge fees, but they often include housing, insurance, and other benefits. Many of these organizations provide fundraising literature which grads can use to solicit donations from friends, family and community organizations.

7 Networking Tips for Introverts to Help Make It Better

7 Networking Tips for Introverts to Help Make It Better 7 Networking Tips for Introverts to Help Make It Better 3I once had a fellow introvert tell me: Ć¢€œIĆ¢€™d rather clean the floor of Grand Central Station with my toothbrush than network.Ć¢€ I think that pretty much sums it up for the vast majority of job seekers with even the slightest leaning toward being an introvert. Statistically, thatĆ¢€™s about half of all job seekers, and to help make it easier, below we cover networking tips for introverts to help turn it from bad to good. Despite all that distaste for networking, you have to do it, right? Yes, you do. Even with all that the Internet gives us, people hire people. You most likely wonĆ¢€™t get a job without connecting your resume or yourself to a real person to get an interview. This is a fact of life that predates the Internet. We have to network and build relationships for jobs, resources, and opportunities. Before I get into some actionable advice, itĆ¢€™s important to understand a bit about how introverts tick. Being around people sucks up our energy. We almost go into autopilot to save energy, which means we avoid networking events or even parties. We tend to form relationships one-on-one. It helps save energy and allows us to focus, which we do very well. When we do speak, itĆ¢€™s either because we have a purpose to speak or a context of understanding about the other person. (We know the other person and have enough background to know where to start a conversation.) To sum this up, events suck up energy, which isnĆ¢€™t fun; being around groups of people isnĆ¢€™t fun; and if you donĆ¢€™t know someone or know what to talk to them about, you are a deer in the headlights. Great. DonĆ¢€™t despair; there are things you can do to work with your natural tendencies. Networking Tips for Introverts to Make It Better Tip #1: Expand where you are. Many of us fail to recognize that our place of business is one big networking opportunity. Introverts do tend to Ć¢€œhunker downĆ¢€ and focus on work rather than relationships, but schedule yourself time daily to get away from the desk and get to know someone better. At work you have a number of workmates, but donĆ¢€™t discount customers, vendors, and contractors. This will also allow you to develop the relationship one-on-one! Tip #2: Look up former workmates. The great thing about our jobs is that we do make work friends, even if we get out of contact when someone moves on. Use LinkedIn to locate some of your former workmates. They will love you for remembering them. Besides, itĆ¢€™s fun to get caught up. Once you connect, stay connected. Tip #3: DonĆ¢€™t work the room. The worst advice for introverts is to try to meet as many people as you can. We hate it. ItĆ¢€™s superficial and you really wonĆ¢€™t get to know others with that strategy. By focusing in on just meeting two or three people, you will feel less overwhelmed and better about going because you got to spend time focusing on the other person. When you hit your target, leave. Tip #4: Follow up is not stalking. I hear this a lot. When you finish speaking to someone, ask for their contact information and suggest coffee. That way when you do make contact, it wonĆ¢€™t be awkward for either of you. Tip #5: Not everyone is perfect for you. If you donĆ¢€™t feel some type of connection to another person, thatĆ¢€™s ok. Not everyone you meet is going to be someone you will or can develop a relationship with. Take the pressure off yourself that you have to get traction with everyone because itĆ¢€™s not realistic. Tip #6: Give first. All relationships are like a bank account. You must deposit first before you can start drawing out any currency. Do not make demands until you have spent time nurturing the relationship. Tip #7: Ask a friend. This is a great introvert strategy. Ask a friend to bring a friend of theirs to meet up for coffee. Explain to them you are expanding your circle and you trust their judgment in people. This strategy gives you a context for talking to them and remains intimate. As an introvert, you have to start thinking creatively about how to network without overwhelming yourself. (Which can happen easily.) Start with one tip and master that before adding another one. Just realize we donĆ¢€™t all have to do things the same way. Bonus Tip: Adapting is key to your career survival, growth, and advancement. 3 Things Im Doing to Find My Own Definition of Success

3 Things IĆ¢€™m Doing to Find My Own Definition of Success 3 Things IĆ¢€™m Doing to Find My Own Definition of Success Article by Mary Sauer For as long as I can remember, I have been a fairly ambitious person. As a young child, I kept journals filled with ideas about what my future would look like. From dream jobs to where I would live, I always had a good idea of what I wanted to accomplish. As Ive grown older, starting a family and a career along the way, Ive experienced something I didnt expect: Ive grown tired of chasing success. For a couple years now, Ive felt that Ive been falling short. Ive been frustrated to find Im always a couple steps behind where I expected I would be at any given moment. More maddening, perhaps, is that its been a while since I have felt I was truly giving my all to accomplish what I had set out to do.  Another version of myself, one characterized by avoidance and self-sabotage, has been winning more often than I care to admit. It wasnt until recently that I realized what was  behind my resistance to moving forward.  It  isnt that I had suddenly become lazy.  Instead, I had adopted a version of success that was a poor fit for me. Finding your own definition of success is important to living a fulfilled life. For a lot of millennials, it has been difficult to connect with  a personal vision of success because were constantly inundated by outside opinions at any given time. In an age of business coaches, gurus, and social media influencers, its harder than ever to decide for yourself what a life well lived looks like. I realized I was no longer emotionally connected to the success I was working so hard to achieve. It was a lightbulb moment for me;  I stepped back to see I had adopted another persons definition of success, even down to an income goal and work lifestyle, and it fit like a shoe three sizes too big. To correct this mistake, Ive been redefining my version of success. It hasnt been an overnight change, but Ive learned a few things that have helped me resist the pressure to model my personal success after the success of others: 1. Im Taking a Break From the Noise Career coaching has a time and place for many professionals, but it isnt for me at this specific point in my life. Ive learned a lot by joining mastermind groups and taking courses, but  these things  also pressure a lot of people to set goals for success that match up with the status quo rather than their own personal needs. At least for now, Im taking a break from all the noise. I unenrolled from one course, left a few networking groups, and simply stopped logging into another course I plan to finish once my mind is in a better place. I even went as far as unfollowing some influencers on social media, because I found I was really sensitive to talk of income goals, lifestyle achievements, and the pressure to keep up. 2. Im Practicing Self-Awareness According to clinical psychologist Gladys Rodriguez, self-awareness plays an important role in creating an individualized definition of success. Start connecting with your feelings, Rodriguez advises. Practice breathing deeply and in silence to connect with that inner voice that will tell you what you need and what you want. For me, this  practice has  meant spending the time I  used to invest in coaching and mastermind groups on reflection. Ive done a lot of journaling  to explore my desires for the future. This time of intense self-awareness has allowed me to connect with a more holistic view of success. While I was once fairly committed to a singular goal of achievement as a writer, Ive become more aware of how important it is to define success for all areas of my life, including my family life, my health, and having fun. 3. Im Celebrating How Far Ive Come Most importantly, it became clear that the habit I had of constantly sizing myself up against the successes of others had to stop. Stop looking at social media to determine what you are supposed to do when or what success means, advises Rodriguez. She  notes  plenty of research has found it detrimental to use social media as a benchmark for determining your own success. Im trying to replace these comparisons with small celebrations of how far Ive come. In the past, I havent done a great job of making a big deal about my achievements simply because they felt like nothing more than small steps in the grand scheme of things. Now, Im sharing wins with friends, writing about them down in my journal, or treating myself to a glass of wine when Ive reached a new milestone in my personal or professional life. Instead of looking for what you dont have or what you are missing, begin noticing the steps you have taken to achieve what you have, the talents you have cultivated, [and] the milestones you have achieved, Rodriguez says. Nothing is too small. Ultimately, my effort to redefine success has been an exercise in being more present in my life instead of spending too much time worrying about the future or what I could have done differently in the past. It has been a refreshing chance to slow down and acknowledge that success is not some distant milestone, but something I am experiencing right this moment. Job Interview Follow-Up Thank You Note Example

Job Interview Follow-Up Thank You Note Example Job Interview Follow Did you walk out of an interview and realize you forgot to mention a vital fact? Sometimes, even after a terrific interview, you remember something important that you wish you had talked about in more detail. If you missed an opportunity to mention relevant work experience or accomplishments during an interview, dont despair. A  thank you note is the perfect place to share additional information or emphasize a point that you wish had come up naturally during the conversation but didnt. Maybe you left the interview feeling like the hiring manager had some doubts about your qualifications. The information you share in your letter can influence the way the hiring manager perceives how your qualifications will best meet the needs of the position.   What to Include in a Follow-Up Thank You Letter There are a few ways to address additional points in your thank you letter. You can use phrases such as I forgot to mention or I wanted to follow-up on XYZ from our conversation as an entry-point to giving follow-up details and elaborating on answers you gave during the interview. Make sure you express yourself in clear, concise terms, and offer to answer any additional questions that may come up due to the new information you have shared. This may also leave you an opening to make yourself available for another meeting, particularly if you have been moving along in the hiring process, and this wasnĆ¢€™t your first interview. When to Send an Email Follow-Up You will probably want to send this type of thank you letter right away, as an attachment or email rather than by post. The sooner the hiring manager has the additional information, the more favorably you will compare to any candidates they are still in the process of interviewing. How to Format Your Letter or Message When you send your letter as an attachment, it should be formatted like a business letter. Begin with your name and contact information, followed by the date, and the hiring managerĆ¢€™s contact information. You will then begin your letter with a polite salutation, then the body of your letter. Your closing should include your appreciation for the hiring managerĆ¢€™s time and consideration, and your full name. If you decide to send your letter as an email, make sure the subject makes clear what the note is about. Put your name, thank you, and possibly the position you interviewed for in the subject line so that the hiring manager wonĆ¢€™t overlook your email. Because of the volume of email most of us receive, the subject line is important to ensure that your letter doesnĆ¢€™t end up in a junk mail folder somewhere. Your email will begin with the salutation, followed by the body of the letter. Your contact information will follow your closing and signature. Here is an example of a thank you note to a hiring manager that provides details about your candidacy that you wish you had mentioned in the interview. Follow Up to Job Interview Thank You Note Example Your NameYour AddressYour City, State Zip CodeYour Phone NumberYour EmailDateNameTitleOrganizationAddressCity, State Zip CodeDear Mr./Ms. Lastname:I very much enjoyed speaking with you about the opportunity to work with your company in the role of sales executive. My experience in sales and management seem to be a good match for the position you described. The organization of your sales teams is forward thinking, and I believe, one where I could contribute a great deal.I bring with me to the position extensive knowledge of the market, and strong communications skills. In addition, my ability to motivate my team while working within our budget will provide your company with an edge over others in the market. My presentation skills allow me to communicate effectively with directors, as well as keep my team up to date on our progress. During my interview, I neglected to mention the series of classes I took in public speaking at the local university. It was very interesting and provided m e with the confidence I possess now while organizing and presenting a project.Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you about this position.Best Regards,Your Name Expand

How to Lead and Leave your Ego at the Door

How to Lead and Leave your Ego at the Door How to Lead and Leave your Ego at the Door How to Lead and Leave your Ego at the Door Ardi, Ph.D., founder of Corporate Anthropology Advisors and author of The Fall of the Alphas: The New Beta Way to Connect, Collaborate, Influence And Lead (St. Martin, 2013) If you ask most people to describe how a great leader looks and acts, youll often get answers that refer to generals and military commanders, or presidents and heads of state. In other words, we tend to think of leadersas those who rise to the top of the hierarchical pyramid those who display charisma, a take charge attitude, and the self-confidence to issue commands from above consequences be damned. While that leadershipmodel may have worked in the past, the world has changed in ways that make such command-and-control models obsolete. I define this change in my book, The Fall of the Alphas. Call it a changing of the guard, if you will, where the Alpha model of leadership is being phased out in favor of the newer Beta model. A New Model of Leadership This new model describes leaders who have a greater self-awareness and an understanding of how to limit their ego. Ego is a Latin word that means I myself. An individual who views themselves realistically, and recognizes both their strengths and weaknesses, is generally perceived to have a healthy ego. Those of us who have unhealthy egos, on the other hand, tend to preserve their self-judgments and close themselves off to the opinions of others. And yet, it is this sense of inflated self-worth that we seem to reward when it comes to leadership. It would be considered weak and indecisive to weigh the consideration of others in favor of what those at the top of the pyramid have decided. In our outdated Alpha view of the world, weve decided that the best leaders are those with the greatest self-confidence and biggest egos who garner the most influence. To survive and thrive today and into the future, though, business leaders need the appropriate self-awareness to manage their egos. Beta leaders need to be fully invested in the present, rather than viewing situations and individuals through the lens of the self or focusing on future moves on the corporate chessboard. Leading with a Healthy Ego Now dont get me wrong: to be a successful entrepreneur, you need a healthy ego to succeed. The difference is that a Beta leader understands that the success of the organization doesnt rest solely on his or her shoulders. Rather, Beta leaders are self-aware. They understand the limitations of their ego. Thats also why Beta leaders have a desire to include others in the most critical decisions and share in the rewards for work well done. For instance, an Alpha CEO might parade around the office asking workers if they are hitting their numbers, while issuing a none-too-subtle threat if they arent. Beta leaders, on the other hand, ask, What can I do to help you hit your numbers? What are the constraints and how can I remove them? Is there someone who can help and, if so, how can I connect you with them? Imagine how the workers in these two organizations might respond differently? Healthy Leadership Builds Strong Teams Beta leaders must also consider why they respond the way they do. For instance, lets say a suggestion comes in from another member of the organization. A Beta leader asks herself: Do I have a bias or a personal issue that might color or slant my judgment? Am I truly thinking about this suggestion from a place of wisdom and experience? Have I truly thought through the possible unintended consequences that might result from my decisions and actions? When leaders embrace this level of introspection, they are, in fact, far from being indecisive. Rather, they are fostering deep respect for divergent points of view a trait that todays workers cherish in their leaders. Armed with a managed ego, the very best Beta leaders intuitively understand how to play to their strengths and build the very best team possible around them. Self-aware Beta leaders, for example, recognize the gaps in their own skill sets and are confident enough to hire intellectual equals capable of filling those holes. What Defines a Beta Leader A core trait of a Beta leader is the capacity to relinquish the need to control everything and instead bring in new people who reflect the company cultureand who can augment the leaders own skill set. Other traitsthat youll rarely find in their Alpha counterparts thatBeta leaders demonstrate: Are good listeners and communicators. Willing to bet on people by allow them to take risks rather than risking the company on their own bets. Willing to create partnerships within and from outside the organization. Share the rewards of the organizations success beyond the corner office. Actively solicit feedback from their peers and coworkers because they see that as an opportunity to improve themselves. Willing to admit mistakes and ask for help in avoiding repeating them. A Better Way to Lead The best way for leaders to prevent narcissism and ego from impeding their success is to be as aware as possible of their own motives and feelings, and needs and wants of others. To borrow a term from Buddhism, Beta leaders need to practice mindfulness and encourage their peers and employees to do the same. If leaders can pay attention to the humanity of others and show that they actually care, they will yield immeasurable benefits for both themselves and their organization. Thats what being a Beta leader is all about. A Better Pill to Swallow

A Better Pill to Swallow A Better Pill to Swallow A Better Pill to Swallow For millions of Americans who manage chronic health conditions with daily prescription drugs, sticking to the proper dosage instructions can be challenging. A new entry in the wearable sensor technology market could make their doctors orders easier to follow and to swallow. Medication non-adherence is an expensive and growing problem. Some patients willfully take too little or too much. Some misunderstand the complicated package directions. Others simply forget to take their pills from time to time. Whatever the cause, many of these medication mishaps result in visits to the doctors office or emergency room that would have otherwise been unnecessary. As the U.S. population ages and relies on multiple prescriptions to manage complex chronic diseases such as diabetes and dementia, medication mishaps are adding $100 billion to $300 billion to the nations annual healthcare bill, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Ingestible Sensor system from Proteus Digital Health (Redwood City, CA) fights this problem from within. Its key feature is a doctor-prescribed Sensor-Enabled Pill patients swallow along with their other medications. Once in the stomach, a non-toxic semiconductor chip within the pill works with externally worn sensors and electronics to create a daily record of medication-taking and physical activity. Its all part of what Proteus calls a digital health feedback system patients and their doctors can both use to keep chronic diseases in long-term control. The healthcare industry has long wished for some reliable means of supporting patients who either cant or wont follow dosage directions consistently. The Proteus sensor was originally approved as a medical device by the U.S. Food Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012 and earlier this year earned an expanded indication for use in medication adherence monitoring. Proteus Discover skin patch. Image: Utrecht University Patient Data The ingestible sensor comparable in size to a grain of sand can be integrated into an inert pill or other edible material, including active pharmaceutical products. The self-powering biosensor is activated by contact with stomach fluids. It identifies what medication the patient has ingested and when, transmitting that data through the patients tissues to a detector hidden in an externally worn adhesive patch. The patch also contains devices that record patient activity levels and physiologic data such as heart rate and body position. From there, the data are sent by Bluetooth to a mobile device app patients and their in-home care-givers can use to manage their medication reminders, track their weight and blood pressure, and chart their overall progress. The app connects with a Web-based portal for the patients team of professional healthcare providers, who with patient consent can remotely follow individual patients adherence and treatment response. Data can help inform better doctor-patient communication, identify patients in need of more support, and highlight larger trends among multiple patients. Proteus manufactures the digestible sensor using a combination of high-volume methods from the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries. Ingredients are all non-toxic elements present in a normal human diet. Performance-wise, the sensor successfully detects pill ingestion more than 97% of the time and can identify specific pills with 100% accuracy. Error on Trial The Proteus device and other ingestible digital health products sure to follow also have promise in pharmaceutical research and development. About half of all Phase III clinical drug trials fail, keeping potentially useful new drugs off the market for reasons not necessarily connected to their actual effectiveness or safety. One frequent cause is a lack of reliable data documenting the trial participants adherence to medication protocols. Researchers have previously had to rely on patient self-reporting and lab tests to gauge compliance often a cumbersome and inaccurate approach. Oracle Health Sciences (Redwood City, CA) has incorporated Proteus digital feedback data into its InForm Medication Adherence Insights Cloud Service an electronic data capture and management platform for clinical trials. The system boosts a trials chances of success by validating patient adherence data, pinpointing adherence problems early, and helping researchers adjust dosages for improved patient safety or therapeutic effects. At the same time, it reduces trial costs by eliminating time-consuming manual compliance monitoring procedures. The system addresses two long-standing and complex challenges: measuring participant adherence to drug protocols and identifying the optimum dosing regimen for recommended use, said Steve Rosenberg, senior vice president and general manager of Oracle Health Sciences. Edibles Abound A number of researchers are developing a taste for edible digital health technologies for applications such as endoscopy, counterfeit drug detection, and physiological status monitoring for military troops stationed in hot climates. At Carnegie Mellon University, for example, engineering professors Christopher Bettinger and Jay Whitacre have teamed up to explore experimental edibles to stimulate damaged tissues, measure digestive health, or deliver drugs to targeted anatomical sites. Their devices combine a shape-memory polymer created in Bettingers laboratory with Whitacres novel nontoxic sodium-ion battery to provide the minimal amount of power required to activate the structure in the body. The inexpensive battery material passes through the body while the polymeric material remains in place to perform such future applications as gastric monitoring, drug delivery, or tissue repair. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Learn about the latest trends in bioengineering at ASMEĆ¢€™s Global Congress onNanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology Data can help inform better doctor-patient communication, identify patients in need of more support, and highlight larger trends among multiple patients.
